I promised a few folks a screencast of Merb and Datamapper a long time ago. I mean it’s all very nice reading about it all on my shiny blog but what about video? Nothing better than being able to watch some geek p0rn while drinking a glass of wine. Heck why not be like me and do that on the London Underground. Glass of wine in one hand Ipod Touch in the other and trying to fend off the heathen hordes with my foot. On it’s a jolly old place that Victoria line.
But I digress. I could of just given you a Merb and Datamapper tutorial, but that wouldn’t have been fun would it? I mean even the Queen’s auntie has written one of those, so no I had to go one further! I give you the Merb, Datamaper and merbful_authentication screencast!! Let it not be said that I’m not a generous and pleasing chap (most pleasing indeed or so in my naughty little dream last night).
Well you can tell that this isn’t rehearsed as I left in all the bloopers including me frantically wishing I’d used in-memory sessions rather than cookies for this demo.

Finally a solid merb screencast. It would be nice to have some audio but its so simple it barely needs it. Nice job.

Cool, just watched it. Thanks Jon!

Nice screencast. Just wondering though, why go through the hassle of using trunk for merb, datamapper, and merb_datamapper? There are gems for those after all, and it would have cut like 2 or so minutes off the screencast.

That's a good question:) It's a personal choice really, the thing is that I prefer running on trunk. Both merb and datamapper are fast moving projects and so it's just easier for me to always be running of trunk so that I can track the latest changes. It's always been easier for me to integrate sooner rather than later when developing with frameworks like these. The other thing is that you'll probably find trunk less bug prone than the official gems as both projects are still work in progress.

Nice. Got to have a look at merbful_authentication before implementing a much more broken scheme myself... The best argument for using trunk is that if you find a bug or need a feature, you fix/add it, create a diff, hop on IRC and with any luck you'll have it applied to trunk within an hour. I've found at least the Merb folks on IRC to be really helpful and friendly that way.

Awsome! Keep them coming :)

Please note that the instructions in the screencast are for pre-0.9 Datamapper and that syntax has been changed after 0.9 that is not backwards compatible.
